Building for the future has a myriad of considerations; just one of them is trees. Trees are structures just as buildings are; however, trees are alive and have on-going dynamic and botanical issues not seen in any other building trade. Design professionals work within an environment which demands value-creation and functionality. Most situations call for trees: trees that exist on a site pre-construction, and new trees that are planted during the work or after the job is completed.  The requirement of trees comes by vision, by ordinance and by client demand!

Existing trees are impacted by construction even when placed behind the yellow tape or construction fencing. Knowing the viability of native trees is critical to both the ultimate vision and the long-term value of the property.

Landscape architecture is focused upon bringing immediate value to the new property. In many situations, consideration for the next decade is sure; however, often long term values are presumed without a clear understanding of plant growth consequences and plant-structure interactions. Many times, the growth needs of trees are largely ignored.

Likewise, incorporation of native trees brings additional character and is always preferred.  Trees create generational value: they need to be protected and nurtured as a site is created or updated.
