Trees add value to properties, but they also involve costs.  How does one know whether the cost outweighs the benefits?  How much can one tree (or several trees) increase property value?  How can trees survive on a construction site?  When a tree is damaged, who is responsible?

ARBORWISE, LTD. was first conceptualized in 1991.  Our commercial services company, TreeMasters, was dealing with a number of negative experiences involving trees lost to construction damages.  On five separate occasions, we were called in to rescue trees that had been damaged by construction activity.  We realized that these trees could have been protected with proper care.  Those experiences led to the vision of a consulting service that would provide preemptive tree preservation services.  Incorporated in 1993, ARBORWISE, LTD. began working with designers and builders to protect and preserve native trees on construction sites.  Also in that year, Jeffrey Ling, the founder, became a Registered Consulting Arborist, RCA #337.

In the summer of 1994, while consulting on tree preservation issues at an estate in Carmel, Indiana, Jeffrey was introduced to the management of Crooked Stick Golf Club.  This led to the preservation plan and the implementation of arbor-care procedures for the historical Chinkinpin Oak at the signature Par 3 Sixth Hole.  Thus began a seven year relationship and the initiation of  the path of leadership that ARBORWISE, LTD. Now holds in the theory and practice of golf course urban forestry.  Over 100 Midwest golf clubs have been served since that time.

In 1995, ARBORWISE, LTD. was retained by an attorney to assist with the investigation of a fallen tree which injured a passenger in a nearby car.  From the resultant consultation on that litigation, the new concept of Horticultural Forensics was formulated. Since that case, we have served in scores of investigations, including four tree-induced fatalities.

ARBORWISE, LTD. now works in the disciplines of plant pathology, entomology and physiology, and is a leading Midwest arboricultural firm providing a full range of information and support services for design and construction professionals, golf course managers, local governments, utilities, insurance and legal professionals who are dealing with horticulture issues, urban forestry concerns and tree preservation projects. We provide the investigations, opinions and supportive services needed to protect and manage existing and new trees on modern sites. ARBORWISE, LTD. is one of the few firms in the United States that provides horticultural forensic investigation services.
